Dhokla (Savory Chickpea Cake)

A great snack for breakfast or anytime.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups GITS® Khaman Dhokla mix
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup water

For the tempering

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons black mustard seeds

For the garnishing

  • 1 tablespoon cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon desiccated coconut

Directions

  • 1)

    Grease a six-inch round metal food storage container with olive oil.

  • 2)

    With a fork, mix the dhokla mix, water and olive oil until it rises.

  • 3)

    Put batter into container and close lid.

  • 4)

    Place in a pan of water, double boiler, or Instant Pot and cook/steam covered for 45 minutes until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Remove from pan or double boiler.

  • 5)

    Allow dhokla to cool in metal container.

  • 6)

    Invert onto a plate.

For the tempering

  • 1)

    Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil for 30 seconds in frying pan.

  • 2)

    Add mustard seeds and cover with a glass lid. Allow the seeds to “pop” for about ten seconds, to infuse the oil with their flavor.

  • 3)

    Immediately pour oil and mustard seeds over the dhokla.

Garnish with cilantro and coconut. Cut in cubes.
